Middle school can be a hard time for students because of changes physically, emotionally, and mentally. Because of these changes, students struggle to find balance in their lives.  They feel like they have no control of themselves or their surroundings and ultimately just want to be heard and respected. Middle school design is currently lacking in stimulation and care. The physical surroundings are bare and unengaging and classes often require long periods of sitting in a desk.  Middle school design needs to have a more student-focused mindset while preparing the students for their futures in a mentally and emotionally healthy environment that focuses on the protection and well-being of the students.

Yakman Middle School is a charter school with a STEAM-based curriculum that emphasizes personal development through autonomous and collaborative education and an environment that promotes flexibility and ownership.
